Sometimes, The Lemons Of Life Seem To Keep On Growing

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade.  Right?  I’ve been having a very trying couple of weeks due to an extremely busy schedule.  This last week alone, I had four evening meetings taking time away from my work and my family.  After these meetings, the wheels in my mind spin, thinking of what steps we can do next.  This is creating a depletion of my energy levels due to the lack of sleep.

I’ve started looking at my life and the impact it’s having on my daughter.  It’s not very often I have this many meetings during the week.  In fact, it was a complete fluke.  However, it’s making me think about how often I miss out on my daughter’s life in the evenings due to work and my volunteering efforts.  There’s some serious thought going into changing some aspects of my life.

However, just when I’m starting to wear myself down and become frustrated at everything that’s been going on in my life, I’m faced with a reality check.  This world is not just mine; it doesn’t revolve around me and my problems.  I’ve been shown that others are struggling just the same, if not more.

Today, I learned a woman on one of my volunteer committees is facing breast cancer.  She’s typically a very private person, not putting herself out there in her struggles (unlike me).  As a volunteer community, we want to be able to take care of our own.  This fight is a hard one, and it’s even harder when you do it on your own.

In addition to that news, I was informed that another volunteer partner is struggling herself.  She just lost a young cousin – one with an infant – to cancer.  Her aunt is taking a turn for the worse with her cancer treatments.  Her daughter has been told she has pre-cancer and needs to take some surgical measurements to prevent it turning into cancer.  Her husband had surgery just weeks ago and will be scheduled for more in a few months.  Her job is exhausting her due to the early mornings and late afternoons.  She’s just barely getting by.

Here I am, sitting in a room, thinking to myself about what I just learned.  These two women have been given a handful; their problems have put mine to shame.  I wonder how they will see things through to the end, if I can offer some added assistance, or if they’ll be able to find the hope that they need.  In the end, I know that each one of us have been handed a few lemons, some are just stronger than others.
