Angela’s Corner: Giving Thanks for FriendsAngela Banker
For some reason, I find friendship to be difficult. I suppose it’s my reserved, shy personality. I tend to be the one that sits back watching the dynamics of the social situation and only chime in when I see fit. I have had, what I thought to be, great friendships that over the years have fizzled out. Fortunately, I do have a handful of amazing friends. These are those friends that you might not see or talk to on a daily basis, but as soon as you do get to chat, you pick up right where you left off.
Having a fantastic support group is one thing. Having those people be your friends puts the cherry on top of the sundae. I have two friends that I see almost weekly. If I do not see them, we converse via text messaging frequently. These two wonderful friends were on my extremely small list of “to tell” when I found out I had some suspicious calcifications. I knew that these two would be my support from the start. They were the ones that would rally around me, cheer me up, and take the time to ask how I was. I am so appreciative of them that every year I say “thank you” in a quick text message on my anniversary followed by a celebration of my success over lunch or dinner.
I have a few other friends that should be acknowledged. They range from my longest girl-friend, to my husband’s best friend, to my biggest cheerleaders. I cannot express my gratitude in only a few words, and to me, I need to just simply give them the biggest hug possible. Each one of these friends opened their hearts and their souls to me, and I am forever grateful for their generosity.
Friends, especially good friends like these, bring a lot of joy to what could be a dark place if left alone. These few friends are friends that stick to you like glue. They are there through the happy times, the sad times, and those times when all you want to do is scream. Friends like these can challenge you, yet still cheer you on along the way. Friends like these are the ones you hold onto and don’t let go.
Today, I thank not just those friends in particular, but all of my friends – past and current. Without you and the role you played in my life, I would not be the person I am today. Thank you!
