Maxine Devereaux bared her mastectomy scars on the cover of Enspire Magazine in October of 2013. Diagnosed with Stage 3C triple negative breast cancer in the fall of 2010, she went on to lose her left breast (her favorite) and then, 15 months later, her right. Maxine says it was important for her to bare her scars because nobody shows them. “Everybody just thinks breast cancer is a race and a ribbon. I don’t knock people for the race and the ribbon — they’re my ‘breasties’. But to see the scars, you know somebody’s been through a battle and they’re struggling. I just want people to see it’s more than a pink ribbon, it’s more than a race.”

In this interview on Kristy TV, Maxine talks about her experiences with candor, grace, and a fierce bluntness. She says, “We are more than the sum of our body parts.”
