Police Rescue Off The Coast of Florida Saves This 9-Foot Giant’s Life

Two Jacksonville police officers were patrolling in a boat off the shore of Jacksonville when they spotted something unusual — a 9-foot leatherback turtle caught in a crab trap.

The trap’s rope was wrapped around the turtle’s neck, and it was tightening even further as the animal tried to free itself. Realizing that the turtle was exhausted and would be strangled if it continued to struggle, the officers put their life-saving skills to work.

One of the biggest threats to endangered marine species like turtles are fishing nets and traps aimed at catching other species. Thankfully, the swift action of these officers saved this turtle from meeting that fate.

Far too often we see marine animals perish due to discarded fishing lines, nets, and hooks. To all the fishermen out there, please be mindful of your fishing equipment and waste. The safety of the ocean’s precious creatures depend on our actions.
