When Angelina Jolie made the announcement that she had undergone a double mastectomy as a measure to prevent breast cancer, it surprised many. It turns out Jolie had a BRCA mutation which put her chance of developing breast cancer at much higher than the average. Thanks to her bravery and frank discussion of her decision, double mastectomies are becoming much more common.

A double mastectomy is not for every breast cancer patient, however. Certain groups stand to benefit from this more than others.

Of course, only you can make the decision for what’s best for you and your body, but it’s important to aware of all of the options, especially when the traditional stigma attached to a double mastectomy is fading away!
