Jackie Collins Passes Away From Stage IV Breast Cancer

This past Saturday, September 19, bestselling novelist Jackie Collins passed away after a six and a half-year fight with Stage IV Breast Cancer. The 77-year-old writer was well known for her steamy, Hollywood-based books, all 32 of which made the New York Times bestseller list.

In spite of the seriousness of her diagnosis, Collins kept it very quiet, only revealing it to her three daughters. Not even Joan, her sister and close friend, knew about it until about two weeks before Jackie’s death. Instead, she made the most of her last few years on Earth, writing and publishing five more novels, traveling, and going on book tours while receiving treatment. She finally revealed her diagnosis to the public on September 14, claiming she didn’t regret keeping it hushed up. “I did it my way, as Frank Sinatra would say,” she told People in that last interview.

The London-born Collins picked up the pen in her teens, but her 40-year career didn’t begin until 1968, when she published her first novel, The World Is Full of Married Men. It was banned in Australia and South Africa for a while, it was so racy. Nevertheless, her books have been very popular, collectively selling over 500 million copies across 40 countries.

Her family says, “She was a true inspiration, a trail blazer for women in fiction and a creative force.” Needless to say, she will be dearly missed.
