It can be difficult to quiet the negative thoughts that leap into your mind. Sometimes you can overthink a situation until it becomes ten times worse than it actually is! Or you could be having coffee with a friend and having a great time — when suddenly she says something that triggers an old wound or negative emotions.

Michael Singer, author of “The Untethered Soul,” sat down with Oprah to discuss his solution for that. He says when that happens, ask yourself, “Do I want to solve this? Does this need to be solved and do I need to think about it? Or am I willing to just relax and let it pass?”

What you do after asking yourself those questions can really help you free yourself from your negative thoughts.
