Famous TV Personality Reveals She Has Breast Cancer To Robin RobertsC. Dixon
Sandra Lee, the lifestyle aficionado famous for her show “Semi-homemade with Sandra Lee” as well as her cookbooks and magazine, made an important announcement to Robin Roberts on Good Morning America: she has breast cancer.
She got the news on March 27th, about 20 minutes after completing a photo shoot for People’s Most Beautiful issue.
“I just was still,” she says. “I didn’t even cry. I was stunned, you know? And that’s just how fast life turns — it turns on a dime.”
The cancer was caught early and she underwent a lumpectomy; however, the margins weren’t clear. So both her radiologist and doctor recommended that she get a double mastectomy in addition to 6-8 weeks of radiation. In their words: “You’re a ticking time bomb.”
Lee has been dating Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York, since 2005, and he was by her side during the surgery.
Robin Roberts was diagnosed at 46, and GMA co-anchor Amy Robach was diagnosed at 40. Lee is just 48 years old, and talked passionately with Roberts about the current guidelines for mammograms. Some organizations recommend getting mammograms after age 40, and others after age 50. This outrages Lee, who is planning on encouraging her siblings and nieces to get screened as soon as possible.
“Girls have to know,” Lee says in the following video. “Girls in their 20s and their 30s just have to know. And I don’t want women to wait. And that’s why I’m talking. If it saves one person, and makes one more person go get a mammogram — and if they’re sitting at home right now watching this, don’t watch this TV. Go pick your phone up and call your doctor and get your rear end in there and get a mammogram right now.”
