This Woman’s Breast Photo Went Viral For All The Right ReasonsThe Breast Cancer Site
Before undergoing her mastectomy in response to a stage two breast cancer diagnosis, Lisa Royle wanted to use her breasts to make a difference. She decided to do something a little drastic and posted a picture on Facebook of the dimpled skin on her left breast, the first sign that led to her diagnosis. She blocked out her nipple with a cartoon heart, and the photo is cropped very close-up, with the dimple circled in red.
In her caption beneath the photo, Royle described the simplicity of the symptom, saying there were “very subtle dimples underneath that could easily be missed when we’re all rushing round getting ready in a morning.”
Dimples are a less-talked about breast cancer symptom, but changes in your skin — whether it’s a change in texture or appearance — should not be overlooked.
She ends with a very important message: “Please take time to look at your boobs. It could save your life.”
We couldn’t agree more.
Royle posted the photo on Facebook on May 11, and it’s since been shared more than 69,000 times. She underwent a mastectomy on May 25, and shared with TODAY that she hopes the photo “encourages everyone to check their boobs regularly, not just feel for lumps but to look for changes too.”
Royle is now gearing up for chemotherapy as well as radiation and targeted therapy, and she is optimistic. “Hearing you have cancer is the scariest thing but it could have been a lot worse had I not spotted it as early as I have,” she says.
Encourage your loved ones to check themselves — and don’t overlook this little-known sign!
