Angela’s Corner: The Best MedicineAngela Banker
The saying “laughter is the best medicine” often holds true for me. Without it, I’m not sure how well I would have held up emotionally. I definitely had a few moments where depression wanted to set in and have a “pity-me” party, but I simply wasn’t going to let that happen.
Keeping the phrase “It is what it is” in mind throughout was a blessing. I found myself, at the times needed most, repeating those words. Telling me there wasn’t anything I could have done differently. Reminding myself to breathe and begin to enjoy the life in front of me. Then, I would start to make jokes about my experiences and journey. If I was going to have a second surgery to remove my nipples, I might as well enjoy them on their last night. The newest twin girls in my family will need names. How does Left and Right sound? Maybe B1 and B2. Better yet, Lucy and Ethel!
No matter how much laughter was had between me, my family, and my friends, the best form of medicine came a couple days after that second surgery. I remember sitting on my sister’s couch, lounging in front of the television, when I heard the best words spoken in a week. “Mommy!” squealed my six-year old daughter as she ran to give me the gentlest hug possible. Seeing my husband and daughter after being apart for a week warmed my heart. Sure I talked to them daily, sometimes more frequently when I needed to hear their voices. But, nothing compares to seeing them in person: to touch them, hold them, and laugh with them. From that point on, my spirits started to lift more as I began walking on Cloud 9. I was able to feel the hole in my heart begin to fill as my happiness took over. It honestly was one of the best feelings I have ever experienced.
To this day, having my family by my side is a way to keep my spirits lifted. We often laugh when we are together. I look forward to these moments as it seems to be a way for me to heal. In fact, it’s not uncommon for a joke to effortlessly slide off my tongue. Whether you have laughter or loved ones to help pass the time and keep your positivity flowing, just realize that finding your happy place could easily be your best medicine.
